BHOPAL: Groundwater is the most preferred source of water in various user sectors in India on account of its near universal availability, dependability and low capital cost.
The increasing dependence on ground water as a reliable source of water has resulted in indiscriminate extraction in various parts of the country without due regard to the recharging capacities of aquifers and other environmental factors.
The same situation exists for Madhya Pradesh where 84 out of 313 blocks have acute water deficiency. Understanding the seriousness of the situation MGNREGA in partnership with MoRD-GIZ supported bilateral project WASCA (Water Security and Climate Adaptation in Rural India) has developed a simple mechanism to develop GIS based Groundwater Intervention Management Plan (GWIMP) for the 84 NOS water deficient Block and an animated video teaser of the same will be launched by Sufya Faruqui Wali, IAS, Commissioner, MGNREGA at Paryawas Bhawan on Saturday.
This is the first such initiative by MGNREGA in any State to deal with the depleting Groundwater resources with a scientific approach. The event was conducted in a hybrid format – physical + virtual The participants of the event were: Sufya Faruqui Wali, IAS, Commissioner, MGNREGA, Madhya Pradesh, M L Tyagi, Joint Commissioner, MGNREGA, M K Jain, Superintendent Engineer, MGNREGA, Rajeev Ahal, Director, NRM, GIZ-India, Dr.Krishan Tyagi, Senior Technical Expert, GIZ-India, Dr.Jagdish Purohit, Technical Expert, GIZ-India , Sourav Pahari, State Coordinator, GIZ-India 8.
